Back in 2016, we wrote that the question was not “will a bridge be built?” but “when?”. Last year, in July 2024, we reported that the project had gained serious momentum, with multiple route options under study. Now, nearly a decade later, the project appears to be entering its most concrete phase yet—with a likely route identified and a full timeline beginning to take shape.

Although nothing has been formally approved, these new developments point to a major transformation ahead for Koh Chang’s infrastructure, accessibility, and long-term investment landscape.

📍 Route 3 Reportedly Identified as Preferred Option

According to a recent post by Trat Post News (Source: Trat Post News – Facebook) the route that scored highest in the government’s technical evaluation is Route Option 3. This proposed alignment would stretch approximately 5.9 kilometers, starting from the mainland near Ao Thammachat Pier and ending on Koh Chang between the old Centrepoint Pier and Amber Sands Beach Resort, in the Dan Mai area.

This route was favored for its balance of:

  • Engineering and traffic efficiency
  • Economic and logistical potential
  • Minimal disruption to protected forest and mangrove zones

However, the route does cross sections of Koh Chang Marine National Park and a short span of coral reef, both of which will be subject to further environmental review.

💬 Public Input and Local Feedback

In late 2024, the Expressway Authority of Thailand (Exat) conducted five public hearings in Trat and on Koh Chang to present the proposed routes and gather local opinions. These meetings drew nearly 400 attendees, including residents, business owners, and officials from affected areas.

Key feedback included:

  • Strong support for Route Options 1 and 3, with Route 3 ultimately receiving the highest technical score.
  • Calls for sufficient bridge clearance to allow boats and ferries to pass safely.
  • Concerns over impact to coral reefs and marine ecosystems, especially around Dan Mai and Salak Phet.
  • Suggestions for supporting infrastructure, such as scenic viewpoints and road links connecting to existing villages.
  • Requests for clarity on toll rates, long-term maintenance, and how the project would directly benefit locals.

These insights are now being used to guide the ongoing Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and final design review, scheduled to continue through 2026.

🗓️ Next Major Step: Public Hearings This April

The next major milestone in the Koh Chang Bridge project is a second round of public hearings, where the selected route is expected to be formally presented. These meetings will also share environmental impact findings and offer a final opportunity for public input before the project moves toward final approvals.

If you live, work, or invest on the island, this is your chance to stay informed and be part of the conversation.

📍 Hearing Schedule:

  • Tuesday, April 1, 2025Koh Chang District
    🕘 08:30 – 12:00
📍 Paradise Hill 1 Meeting Room, Koh Chang Paradise Hotel
  • Wednesday, April 2, 2025Mueang Trat District
    🕘 08:30 – 12:00

📊 Project Timeline: From Studies to Construction

The Koh Chang Bridge project is progressing step by step, and while it remains in the planning phase, the overall path forward is becoming clearer.

Between 2024 and 2026, authorities are focused on completing technical feasibility studies, environmental assessments (EIA), and gathering public input through formal hearings. These stages are critical for ensuring the chosen route meets both national standards and local concerns.

Once this phase is completed, the project will move to the next step: submission for government approval by the Cabinet, which is expected sometime after 2026.

If approved, construction is currently projected to begin in 2029, with the bridge scheduled to open for public use in 2033.

🏡 Real Estate Implications for Koh Chang

Even in its planning stages, the bridge project is already influencing how both locals and outsiders view Koh Chang’s future. For those interested in property or development, the implications are real:

  • Land Appreciation: Zones near the proposed endpoints—Dan Mai, Ao Thammachat, and Centrepoint—could become future connectivity hubs.
  • Rental & Tourism Potential: Improved access may extend the tourist season and attract long-term visitors, supporting growth in the rental and hospitality sectors.
  • Infrastructure Spillover: Major projects tend to bring upgrades in nearby roads, utilities, and services—enhancing livability and long-term property value.
